Techniques of Mushroom Production |
Mushroom production technology involves preparing compost, growing the mushrooms, and managing the crop. The technology has evolved to improve efficiency, sustainability, and productivity.
Compost preparation
Materials: The most common compost is made from wheat straw and horse manure, but synthetic compost made from hay and wheat straw is also used.
Process: The compost is prepared in two phases. The substrate is wetted and then stacked into aerobic piles. Artificial aeration can be used to increase the temperature and make the compost more uniform.
Pasteurization: The compost is pasteurized to kill undesirable microorganisms.
Growing the mushrooms
Spawning: The spore mass is suspended in sterilized water and added to a culture medium. The germinating spores are then transferred to culture tubes.
Casing: The culture medium is poured into petriplates and inoculated.
Pinning: The mushroom pin heads appear on the third day of opening the beds.
Harvesting: The mushrooms are harvested daily or every other day before spraying water. |
